E7018 Low Hydrogen Welding Electrodes: Applications and Selection Guide
Low hydrogen welding electrodes are widely used in structural steel fabrication, machinery manufacturing, pressure equipment, and heavy industrial applications.
Among them, E7018 is one of the most commonly used classifications for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). It provides good mechanical properties and is suitable for many carbon steel and low-alloy steel applications.
Understanding the differences between E7018, E7018-1, and E7018 H4R can help buyers select suitable welding consumables.
1. What Is an E7018 Welding Electrode?
E7018 is a low-hydrogen, iron-powder coated welding electrode classified under AWS A5.1.
The classification indicates:
- E: Covered welding electrode
- 70: Minimum tensile strength of 70,000 psi
- 1: Suitable for all welding positions, with limitations depending on electrode size
- 8: Low-hydrogen, iron-powder coating and specified current characteristics
E7018 electrodes are commonly used for structural steel fabrication, machinery manufacturing, bridges, and industrial equipment.
2. E7018 vs. E7018-1 vs. E7018 H4R
Although these electrodes belong to the E7018 family, their classifications and supplementary designations have important differences.
E7018 – Standard Low Hydrogen Electrode
E7018 is widely used for general structural steel welding where low-hydrogen weld deposits and reliable mechanical properties are required.
E7018-1 – Improved Low-Temperature Toughness
E7018-1 has additional impact toughness requirements compared with standard E7018 under AWS A5.1.
It may be selected for applications requiring improved low-temperature performance, subject to the applicable welding procedure and project specifications.
E7018 H4R – Hydrogen and Moisture Resistance Designation
H4 indicates a diffusible hydrogen limit of 4 mL per 100 g of deposited weld metal under the specified test conditions.
R indicates compliance with the applicable moisture-resistance requirements.
These supplementary designations are important for projects with strict hydrogen-control requirements.
3. Typical Applications
Low hydrogen welding electrodes are commonly used in:
- Structural steel construction
- Bridges and heavy steel structures
- Machinery and equipment fabrication
- Shipbuilding and offshore fabrication
- Pressure equipment manufacturing
- Industrial maintenance and repair
The final electrode classification should be selected according to the base metal, required mechanical properties, welding procedure, and applicable standards.
4. Storage and Handling
Proper storage is essential for low hydrogen welding electrodes.
Excessive moisture absorption can increase the risk of hydrogen-related weld cracking.
Users should follow the electrode manufacturer’s recommendations regarding storage temperature, exposure limits, and reconditioning procedures.
Damaged or improperly stored electrodes should not be used for critical welding applications without appropriate evaluation.
5. How to Choose the Right Electrode
When selecting E7018-family welding electrodes, buyers should consider:
- Base metal grade and thickness
- Required tensile strength and impact toughness
- Welding position and joint design
- Applicable AWS, ASME, or project specifications
- Diffusible hydrogen requirements
- Manufacturer certifications and test documentation
For critical applications, always verify the product datasheet, certification, and approved welding procedure before use.
